MAX AFANASIEV

Photographer, artist and curator. Born in 1971 at Kherson, Ukraine. Graduated from Academy of Architecture and Design (Odesa, Ukraine). He works mainly with photography, digital painting, video and theatre.

Participant of the International school of Humanities of Eastern and Central Europe (Warsaw, Poland, 2001). Internship for photographers, project SWIЖЕ (Sweden, 2008). Member of UPHA – Ukrainian Photographic Alternative. Art-director of the Centre of Cultural Development “Totem” (Kherson, Ukraine).

In his projects, Maksym Afanasiev combines genres and art techniques. Each project is an experiment, where internal reality breaks through almost imperceptible cracks in everydayness, ordinary things acquire a mystic value, urban or natural landscapes become the stage of invisible theatre, domestic actions turn into rituals. In Infants project, the faces of ordinary teenagers in Renaissance lighting generate the premonition of new prophecy.
